Ingredients for Instant Pot Salisbury Steak.

Ingredients:

  • Ground Beef – For this simple recipe, I’m using 85% lean/15% fat to make our ground beef patties.
  • Breadcrumbs – Using breadcrumbs will help bind the patties together. Alternatively, you can use panko bread crumbs if you’d like.
  • Egg – Adding an egg will help keep this Instant Pot Salisbury Steak recipe moist.
  • Salt and Pepper – Use salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Olive Oil – You”ll need some extra virgin olive oil, but you can use butter or avocado oil if you prefer.
  • Onion – Using onion will add flavor to our Salisbury steak gravy.
  • Garlic – You can use fresh garlic or garlic powder.
  • Mushrooms – I’ll be using crimini mushrooms, but feel free to use white mushrooms to make our savory mushroom gravy.
  • Beef Broth – To make our delicious gravy, you’ll need some beef broth or beef stock.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Adding Worcestershire sauce provides an umami flavor to our flavorful Salisbury steak.
  • Tomato Paste – Using a bit of tomato paste adds sweetness and acidity to our onion gravy.
  • Mustard Powder – Mustard powder adds a bit of heat and depth to this easy Instant Pot Salisbury Steak without overpowering it.
  • Cornstarch – To help thicken our brown gravy, you’ll need some corn starch to make a cornstarch slurry.

How to Make Instant Pot Salisbury Steak

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper together and form 6 thin patties.

Brown the Salisbury Steak Patties

Set the saute function of your Instant Pot on, and drizzle in two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Begin to brown the Salisbury steak patties for 2-3 minutes on each side.

You will have to brown the patties in batches to properly brown them without overcrowding the hamburger steak patties. Move the browned patties to a plate and set aside.

Make the Mushroom Gravy

With the saute feature still on, saute your diced onion and sliced mushrooms for 5 minutes. Add in the minced garlic and saute for 30 seconds. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up any brown bits stuck to the bottom of the pot.

To the Instant Pot, add the beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Allow it to come up to a simmer and add the beef patties to the Instant Pot. Place the lid on, ensure the valve is set to ‘Sealing’, and cook on High Pressure for 12 minutes.

Once the timer is up, allow the Salisbury steak to release naturally for 10 minutes before carefully removing the lid. If you don’t have time, carefully do a quick release.

Press the saute function back on and bring the gravy up to a simmer. Make a cornstarch slurry by combining 3 tablespoons of cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of cold water in a small bowl, and mix it into the gravy. Stir and allow the gravy to thicken for a minute or two.

If the gravy is still not thick to your liking, add an additional tablespoon or two of cornstarch.  Serve over mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, or egg noodles.  Enjoy!
