I don’t know about you, but I love a good crispy chicken Parmesan! Tender chicken with a heavy dollop of tomato sauce, followed by gooey mozzarella cheese makes for a delicious dinner! But it used to take me forever to make it. It was just too tedious. But this one-pan chicken Parmesan recipe utilizes less dishes, which makes me (and my husband who is the dishwasher!) a happy camper.
So grab your ingredients and let’s cook up this simple one-pan meal!
The Players for One Pan Chicken Parmesan
Ingredients:
- Chicken Breasts – You’ll need 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts that have been cut in half lengthwise. Alternatively, you can use whole chicken breasts, but you’ll need to tenderize the chicken by pounding it with a mallet or rolling pin.
- Salt and Pepper – Use salt and black pepper to season the chicken.
- Egg – One egg is all you’ll need.
- Milk – I use whole milk for this recipe because that’s what we drink in our household, but use any type of milk that you have.
- Bread Crumbs – You can use Italian seasoning bread crumbs or plain breadcrumbs. Either will work!
- Parmesan Cheese – You’ll need some freshly grated Parmesan cheese to use in our breadcrumb mixture.
- Seasonings – For this one pan recipe, I’ll be using dried oregano, thyme, and basil.
- Olive Oil – You’ll need extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil to saute the chicken in the skillet.
- Marinara Sauce – I’ll be using store-bought pasta sauce, but you can use homemade if you prefer! Using premade marinara sauce makes this recipe much faster!
- Mozzarella – You’ll need some mozzarella cheese to put on top of our chicken parmesan. You can either use whole mozzarella cheese that you can slice into rounds, or use a block and grate some cheese over the top. I’ll be using block mozzarella cheese.
- Basil – While optional, adding some fresh basil on the top after the chicken is done cooking enhances the flavor and aroma, but you can forgo that if you’d like.
Tools:
- Large Skillet – You’ll need an oven-safe skillet like a cast iron skillet to make this best chicken parm recipe! You’ll be using the skillet to saute both sides of the chicken and then move the skillet into the oven.
How to Make One Pan Chicken Parmesan
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare the chicken. Place each chicken breast between two sheets of plastic wrap and using a rolling pin, gently pound the chicken until it is about 1/2 inch thickness. Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper.
In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg and milk together and set aside. In a separate shallow bowl (I like to use pie pans), combine the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and seasonings.
Dip the Chicken
Dredge each chicken breast in the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Then place the chicken into the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere the Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs to the chicken. Place it onto a plate while you continue the process with the remaining chicken.
Cook the Chicken
In your large oven-safe skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add your breaded chicken to the olive oil and saute the chicken for 2 minutes on one side. Flip the chicken over and saute it for an additional 2 more minutes. Place the entire skillet into the oven and cook for 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, place about a couple of tablespoons of marinara sauce on top of all the chicken, followed by the mozzarella cheese. Place the skillet back into the oven for an additional 10 minutes so that the sauce is heated through and the cheese has melted.
Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired, and serve over your favorite pasta. Serve this with a green salad or my favorite 5-ingredient Cheesy Garlic Bread Recipe. Enjoy!
