I don’t know about you, but I love apple season (although apples are available year-round)!  My family has been apple picking once and it was such a fun time.  We collected a lot of apples from the Jack Creek Farms apple orchards including fuji and gala apples.

One of the best things about making cast iron skillet apple cobbler is its versatility—use your favorite apples!  Whether it’s tart Granny Smiths, sweet Pink Lady apples, or a mix of varieties, each brings its own unique flavor and texture to the dish.

You might need to adjust the amount of white sugar that you use depending on how sweet the apples are.  Scroll down to the bottom of the post for the recipe card.  Let’s bake!

ingredients laid out on the counter for cast iron skillet apple cobbler.
Ingredients for Cast Iron Skillet Apple Cobbler.

Ingredients:

  • Butter – I’ll be using 6 tablespoons of salted butter, but feel free to use unsalted butter if that’s what you have!
  • Apples – Use any fresh apples you’d like! I’m using 4 Granny Smith apples that I’ve peeled, cored, and sliced.
  • Brown Sugar – To sweeten our apple sauce, I’ll be using light brown sugar, but you can also use dark brown sugar in a pinch!
  • Spices – You’ll need one teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
  • Lemon Juice – Fresh lemon juice brightens the natural sweetness of the apples.
  • Flour – Plain, white all-purpose flour is needed for the apple mixture and the batter.
  • Sugar – White granulated sugar is needed for this perfect dessert!
  • Baking Powder – Adding baking powder to our cobbler will help the batter to rise.
  • Salt – Just a pinch of kosher salt to bring all the flavors together.
  • Milk – I’m using whole milk to make our batter mixture, but feel free to use skim or non-fat milk if that’s what you have.
  • Vanilla – Adding vanilla extract to our batter gives the dessert.

Tools:

  • Cast Iron Skillet – You’ll need a 12″ cast iron skillet to make this apple skillet cobbler!  I also use my cast iron to make my delicious skillet peach cobbler recipe!

How to make Cast Iron Skillet Apple Cobbler

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a 12″ cast iron skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. I like to bring my butter along the sides of the skillet to help grease the skillet.

Soften the Apples

To the melted butter, add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.  Cook the apples to help soften them for 3-4 minutes.

Sprinkle some ground nutmeg.

Add the lemon juice and sprinkle the flour over the tops of the apples, and cook the flour mixture for an additional minute.  Adding the flour will help to thicken the natural sauce that is being made from the juices inside the apples.

Place the cast-iron skillet into the preheated oven and bake for 35-38 minutes or until the top is golden brown. If you find that the apple cobbler is browning too fast, lightly tent the cobbler with aluminum foil while it continues to bake.

    4 stars
First, the recipe pictures are accurate. Each step is exactly how mine looked. I used green apples, and they were delicious. Four stars is for the batter. Maybe I over beat it because it turned out a little rubbery. Is it like brownies—stir just until blended? It’s yummy enough to try again, but next time I’ll make a brown sugar topping to sprinkle on 20 minutes in.

Happy New Year Melissa! The batter will be definitely be thicker, but shouldn’t be rubbery? And you’re correct, stir until blended, perhaps I should add that to the recipe. And a brown sugar topping sounds incredible! Would you report back with how that works out if you try it again? I’d be most grateful, thank you so much! 😀
