These crumbly scones offers a fresh orange flavor with just the right amount of sweetness from the sweet orange glaze, making them a family favorite of all ages! I’ll show you how to make this easy orange scone recipe step by step. Let’s bake!
The Players for Panera’s Orange Scones
Ingredients:
- Flour – You’ll need all purpose flour for these flaky orange scones.
- Sugar – Plain, granulated white sugar is all you’ll need.
- Baking Powder – This will help make these scones rise and helps create a flaky and tender scone.
- Salt – Using salt when baking helps balance out all fo the flavors together.
- Butter – You’ll need some cold butter that is cut into cubes. You can use unsalted butter if you’d like!
- Heavy Cream – To make our Panera scone recipe, you’l need room temperature heavy cream. Alternatively, you can use half and half.
- Orange Juice – To taste the orange in these perfect scones, I recommend using orange juice concentrate. If you can’t find that at your local grocery store, feel free to use fresh orange juice.
- Grand Marnier – For this orange scones recipe, using a orange liqueur like Grand Marnier, really elevates the bright citrus flavor. I also use grand marnier in my Overnight Creme Brulee French Toast Bake! As a substitute, you can use pure orange extract.
- Orange Zest – Panera’s orange scones uses lots of fresh orange peel in both the scones and the glaze.
- Powdered Sugar – To make the icing for these glazed orange scones, you’ll need some confectioners sugar.
Tools:
- Pastry Cutter – Using a handheld pastry blender helps cut the butter into the dry ingredients of our scone batter. This will come in handy for other scone recipes such as these Starbucks Copycat Pumpkin Scones.
- Parchment Paper – To bake our flaky scones, you’ll need either some parchment paper or some silicone baking mats.
- Grater – To get the zest of the orange, you’ll need a microplane. You can also use the smaller side of a box grater if you’d like.
How to Make Panera Orange Scones
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and place the oven rack in the middle of the oven. Line a cookie sheet with silicone baking mats or parchment paper. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Using a pastry cutter or two knives, cut in the cold cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Alternatively, you can use a food processor to blend the butter with the flour mixture.
In a small bowl, combine the heavy cream, orange juice concentrate, Grand Marnier (or orange extract), and fresh orange zest together. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until moistened. The scone mixture will be slightly dry and crumbly.
Cut the Scone Dough
Pour the scone mixture out onto a lightly floured surface or onto a large piece of parchment paper. Knead the dough about 5 times and form into a ball. Using your hands, pat the dough flat into a 9″-10″ circle, about 3/4″ thick. Cut the dough into an ‘X’ shape. Then cut into a ‘+’ sign, to create 8 triangle scones.
Place the unbaked scones onto your prepared baking sheet and bake the scones for 15 -17 minutes until golden brown. The scones should have crisp outer edges. Remove the scones to a wire rack and allow the scones to cool completely before icing. I like to place the parchment paper that the scones were baking on, under the cooling rack to catch any drips from the sweet orange glaze.
For the sweet orange glaze, whisk the glaze ingredients together. Dip the scones down into the sweet glaze to coat. Alternatively, you can take a spoon, and spoon the icing over the tops of the scones. Allow the icing to firm before eating. Enjoy!
Storage and Freezing Instructions
To store any leftover orange scones, place them into an airtight container or a plate wrapped with plastic wrap. They can be kept on the counter for up to 3 days.
If you would like to freeze these delicious scones, wrap your cooled scones tightly in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer bag.. Thaw the frozen scones at room temperature. You can keep these orange scones in the freezer for up to 3 months.
