If you’re unfamiliar with this classic Christmas movie, “Home Alone” is a funny and heart-warming 1990 film directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes. The story follows a young boy named Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, who is accidentally left behind when his whole family goes on a family trip for Christmas. Home alone, Kevin must defend the McCallister residence from two con men, Harry (played by Joe Pesci) and Marv (played by Daniel Stern), by using a series of booby traps and tricks.
The film combines humor and heartwarming moments as Kevin learns to fend for himself and eventually reunites with his family. Home Alone imparts a mix of lessons including the importance of family and the power of forgiveness. This great movie is known for its slapstick comedy and memorable scenes.
Home Alone Family Movie Night
I’ve been watching Home Alone at Christmas time ever since it first came out when I was a little girl. Now, I get the pleasure of creating my own Christmas tradition and watching this with my 3 children and husband every year.
This family film is in my top 10 to watch during Christmas vacation, not only due to the hilariousness and nostalgia factor of the movie, but also for the food! Pizza, Ice Cream, and Macaroni and Cheese! Let’s have the ultimate junk food evening and have a Home Alone Movie night!
Food for Home Alone
Here’s what’s on the menu for our Christmas movie night Home Alone party
“A lovely cheese pizza just for me.” – Kevin McCallister
- Pizza – This is the classic option while watching Home Alone. In the movie, Kevin orders and enjoys a cheese pizza all to himself. This is after his older siblings eat his pizza the night before leaving the family home for their vacation. While we won’t be having just plain cheese pizza, I’ll be making two different types. A pepperoni pizza for my kids, and a ‘grown-up’ pizza made of mushrooms and kale for my husband and I.
“Bless this highly nutritious, microwaveable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale, Amen.” – Kevin McCallister
- Macaroni and Cheese – My mouth always watered when I saw Kevin sit down at the table getting ready to chow down on his Macaroni and Cheese dinner. It was a travesty to see him leave it there uneaten at the table. But that’s not happening tonight! This Easy Stove-Top Macaroni and Cheese is cheesy, creamy, and super fast to make!
Dessert for Home Alone Family Dinner Night
“Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish, you better come out and stop me!” – Kevin McCallister
- “Junk” Sundaes – The ‘junk’ that our eight-year-old troublemaker is referring to is soda, chips, and a massive Ice cream sundae. I’m 100% positive his mom, played by Catherine O’Hara, would not allow. So we’re making our own toned-down version of Kevin’s sundae, with a couple of scoops of ice cream, large marshmallows, a drizzle of chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and cherries on top.
“Will you please tell Santa that instead of presents this year, I just want my family back.” – Kevin McCallister
- Kevin’s Christmas Eve Cookies – I absolutely love the scene in the film, where Kevin is getting ready for Christmas morning, as if he’s not all alone in an empty house. You see Kevin on Christmas Eve, walk into the family room where the Christmas tree is brightly lit and he’s holding a plate of M&M cookies and carrots and a glass of milk. I love it because although he got the ‘bad guys’ arrested, it still shows that he’s just a little boy, waiting for Santa to come. So we’re making Kevin McCallister’s Christmas Eve Cookies.
Home Alone Activity
“This is my house! I have to defend it!” – Kevin McCallister
One of the best scenes in the movie is watching Kevin’s battle plans come to fruition. He unfolds this large poster where he drew out how he was going to defeat the pair of burglars that are about to storm his house.
While I hope and pray we’ll never have burglars in our house, I thought it would be fun to see how my kids’ battle plans would look like on paper. This project is super easy and requires very little time with no mess! All you’ll need are some white poster boards, crayons, and markers. Explain to your kids to draw out and color what items they would use that are already in their house, to take down the bad guys!
My kids took some inspiration from the movie at the beginning, but once they started thinking, they really got into it, and they were sitting at the counter for at least 20 minutes working on this fun activity.
Home Alone Dinner Night Conclusion
My family and I enjoyed this Home Alone Family Movie Night so much, and I hope that this gives you some ideas for your family too! Remember, this doesn’t have to be over the top or difficult whatsoever. Pick up some take-n-bakes if you want to keep it easy. Hi there! The battle plans on the post was actually made by my son! I showed him a screen shot from the movie and then he loosely copied it, but had his own spin on it. Hope this helps!
