In this animated film adaptation of “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens, Oliver is a tabby kitten who finds himself abandoned in the mean streets of New York City. He becomes friends with a group of street-smart dogs and together, they survive in the bustling city and engage in various adventures.
During one of their adventures, they run into a little girl named, Jenny, who shows affection towards Oliver. They form a tight-knit bond, and Oliver eventually ends up becoming a member of Jenny’s family.
Oliver and Company Family Movie Night
I’m so excited to be sharing with you our Oliver and Company dinner night with you guys, and it’s been a long time coming. I was supposed to do this last summer but then life happened and it was put on the backburner. But it’s finally come to fruition and we had the best time!
Decor for Oliver & Company Dinner Night
There really isn’t a clear-cut decor theme for Oliver & Company. However, when I think of New York City dining, for some reason, I always think of that red and white gingham pattern. So I went to my local Dollar Tree and found some gingham red and white napkins, plates, and a tablecloth. I also found the cutest red plastic baskets that you’d find in diners when you order burgers and fries, so thought that would be perfect!
When I was out grocery shopping during my latest WinCo Haul, I perused the seasonal decor section, found this, and thought it would be so cute to have not only for our Oliver & Company themed dinner night but for future family bbq’s too!
This mini picnic table condiment set is absolutely adorable and when my youngest son first saw it, he thought we were all going to eat off of it haha!
Drink Idea for Oliver & Company Dinner Night
I thought the perfect drink for our Oliver & Company dinner night should be something refreshing. New York City is hot and humid in the summer and that’s when the movie takes place. Plus I wanted something orange to match our lovable tabby cat, Oliver. And that’s when Oliver’s Orange Julius came into mind! Oliver, voiced by Joey Lawrence, is the main character in Oliver & Company.
Oliver’s Orange Julius
- 12 oz frozen orange juice concentrate
- 3/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup of ice
Place everything together in a blender, and blend until smooth
Food for Oliver & Company Dinner Night
Here’s our meal plan for our Oliver & Company inspired dinner party. For our main course, what’s more iconic than a New York City Hot dog? Even if you’ve never visited New York City, we’re all familiar with the famous hot dog street vendors that you’d find on the streets of New York.
Dodger’s Dogs
In the movie, you see Dodger, voiced by Billy Joel, use Oliver as a decoy to steal some sausage links from a hot dog vendor. So today, we’re having Dodger’s Dogs. I’m grilling up some hot dogs and brats on the grill and placing them into some brioche hot dog buns.
Tito’s Taters
As one of our sides, I also made Tito’s Taters. Tito, voiced by Cheech Marin, is one of my favorite characters in Oliver & Company. He’s sweet, spicy, super funny, and charismatic! So I’m adding a little bit of heat to these potato wedges by adding some smoked paprika and a bit of brown sugar to balance the slight heat.
Tito’s Taters
- 4 Large Russet Potatoes, cut into wedges
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 teaspoons smoked paprika
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon seasoned salt (or more to taste)
- 1 teaspoon black pepper (or more to taste)
Place sliced potato wedges into a bowl filled with cold water, and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, place all of the wedges on clean towels to dry completely.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mix together potatoes, olive oil, and all of the seasonings. Spread evenly on the baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes, flipping once during the halfway mark.
Rita’s Roasted Veggies
As much as I’d love to only have hot dogs and potatoes, we need a little healthy vegetable on our plate. Rita’s Roasted Veggies are packed with vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and broccoli. Rita, voiced by Sheryl Lee Ralph, is a caring yet sassy Saluki (breed of dog) who becomes protective of Oliver throughout this Disney feature animation.
This is the perfect side dish to pair with our potatoes since I’ll already have the oven on. I’ll be using the upper portion of the oven for Tito’s Taters, and the bottom area for our vegetables.
Rita’s Roasted Veggies
- 1 large zucchini, sliced and quartered
- 1 orange bell pepper, seeded and sliced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and sliced
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- 3 teaspoons olive oil
- salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, toss together all of your vegetables with salt and pepper, and olive oil. Spread evenly across your baking sheet and roast for about 25 minutes.
Francis’ Fruit Salad
To go along with our hot dogs, potatoes, and vegetables I thought a nice fruit salad would pair nicely. So I’m putting together, Francis’ Fruit Salad. This is a medley of kiwi, grapes, oranges, and berries, but feel free to use any fruits that you have!
Francis, voiced by Roscoe Lee Browne, is a sophisticated bulldog with refined taste, who has a passion for Shakespeare. He can be a bit snobby at times, but has a deep love for his friends.
Francis’ Fruit Salad
- 3 kiwis, diced
- 4 mandarin oranges
- 1 cup strawberries, diced
- 1 cup grapes, sliced
Rinse and cut up all of your fruit and place it into a bowl. Allow to chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
Dessert for Oliver & Company Dinner Night
In Oliver & Company, the character Jenny, has the whole gang of dogs over for her birthday party and you see this large layered pink and blue birthday cake. I thought that Jenny’s Birthday Cake would make for the best dessert to end our night!
You don’t have to do anything fancy with this dessert if you don’t want to. Make a vanilla cake from scratch, pick up a box of vanilla cake mix, or go to your local grocery store and purchase a pre-made vanilla cake. You can scrape off the frosting and make your own buttercream frosting using the colors that you see in the movie. The pink looks to be a deep magenta-pink and the blue appears to be a cornflower blue.
I love this gel food coloring set that I got many years ago. It has 12 colors, but you’re able to mix colors to create your own colors! Plus, it’s a lot less messy to work with than liquid food coloring.
Jenny’s Vanilla Birthday Cake
- 3/4 cup salted butter, room temperature
- 1 1/3 cup white sugar
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup whole milk, room temperature
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Baking Jenny’s Birthday Cake
In a large bow, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside. Cream butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in an electric mixer until well combined, at least 2 minutes. In a separate small bowl, mix milk and sour cream together.
To your mixer, begin alternating your flour and milk mixture. Add 1/3 of the flour mixture to your butter and egg mixture and mix until combined. Add 1/2 of the milk mixture, and mix. Continue these steps until everything is combined.
Thoroughly spray two 8-inch cake pans with non-stick cooking spray, place your oven rack in the middle of the oven, and preheat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour your batter evenly amongst the two cake pans and bake your cakes for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely before removing the cakes from the pans.
Buttercream Frosting
- 2 sticks butter, room temperature
- 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3-4 teaspoons heavy cream or milk
Whip your butter in an electric mixture until nice and smooth. Add in your powdered sugar and vanilla. Begin to add in your heavy cream a teaspoon at a time until you get the consistency you like.
To make the cornflower color: mix royal blue and violet together. It will be 2 parts royal blue to 1 part violet.
To make the magenta color: mix red and violet together. It will be 2-3 parts red and 1 part violet.
