Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream or half and half
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat on your stove top, add your cocoa powder, sugars, and the hot water.  Whisk everything together well.
  • Allow the mixture to come up to a simmer and add in both your milk and heavy cream, if using.
  • Let the hot chocolate simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, taking care not to let the milk boil.  Once your hot chocolate comes to your desired temperature, remove the saucepan from the stove and mix in your vanilla extract.
  • Pour your hot chocolate into your favorite mugs and top with additional toppings.
